Learning to Read

Learning to Read is a project that highlights popular science themes in well-known children's literature. Designed for the youngest audiences, the classes and video materials demonstrate that science is everywhere and that an unconventional perspective on classic literature can inspire a better understanding of the world around us. "Learning to Read" is also a regular program at the popular science festival "Copernicus Festival," which includes five lessons for children.

Project

“Learning to Read” is a series of special lessons for children (students in grades 1-8) aimed at showcasing scientific themes in classic school readings and children’s books. The project’s goal is to promote reading and science through lessons led by physicists, psychologists, cognitive scientists, and philosophers, who use children’s literature to inspire students to interpret familiar books in unconventional and deeper ways. For example, during lessons based on “Alice in Wonderland,” children learn the principles of logic and inference, while lessons on “Around the World in 80 Days” teach them about time zones and their functions. The “Learning to Read” program is also part of the “Copernicus Festival” – a popular science festival that gathers thousands of science and culture enthusiasts each year. To date, “Learning to Read” has taken place both in-person – in Kraków’s schools and educational institutions – and virtually, through dedicated mini-lectures for children published on our YouTube channel.

The “Learning to Read” project has received support from the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage under the “Promotion of Reading” program in the following years:
